THE DECISION TO DOWNSIZE

Many Seniors face the dilemma of whether or not to unburden themselves of living in a space that no longer serves their needs and lifestyle. Declining health, death of a spouse, the undertaking of home repairs or simply the desire to live a more tranquil life can motivate this decision. With the imminent retirement of the baby-boomer generation, public and private agencies are preparing to meet their needs, encompassing physical ability and overall health, economic status, interests and lifestyles. For active Seniors the decision to downsize is easier, as they prefer not to be hampered by household maintenance.

What are the options?

Most Seniors prefer to remain in their own home as long as possible. However, as people age this may become more difficult, especially after the death of a spouse when all the responsibility falls on one person. Seniors who no longer have partners rely on a support system usually made up of neighbors, family and friends. The burden is especially great if the adult children live far away and have very little time, busy with children and work commitments. Seniors can expand their support systems, an essential part of living alone, by visiting local Seniors centers, accessing Seniors programs like AARP, joining specific support groups, etc.

For those finding daily activities becoming more difficult or feeling isolated, there are also a wide range of home support services available, from housecleaning and grocery shopping to medical assistance and transportation. These services enable those who have lost a certain amount of independence to remain in their home longer.

An alternative is to move to a retirement home. Today’s assisted-living facilities offer many levels of care and activities to meet the changing and varied needs of Seniors, ranging from a modest lifestyle and pricing to the more exclusive with enhanced amenities. They provide home cooked meals, social activities, companionship and personal care assistance. They can also advise what financial assistance might be available, such as Medicare and other government programs.

The decision to downsize is always trying. During the move from a house filled with precious memories and keepsakes to a smaller residence, Seniors frequently experience regret and grief. As items are removed from storage, memories are triggered. Selecting which items to keep and which to leave can be emotionally traumatic.
